Homebuyers Enjoy an Array of Exterior Styles, Survey Finds

The National Association of Home Builders’ recent survey found that Americans do not have a strong preference for a specific exterior home design. NAHB’s What Home Buyers Really Want survey asked respondents about preferred exterior design for the first time. Respondents could choose traditional, contemporary, transitional, or modern. The exterior design style with the largest share of interest was traditional with 32% of the votes, followed by contemporary with 24%, then transitional at 16%, and modern at 14%. Across the nine U.S. regions, not one exterior design style gained the most preference, says NAHB.

 What Home Buyers Really Want, 2021 Edition sheds light on the housing preferences of the typical home buyer, but also on how those preferences change over time, and how they may vary based on demographic factors such as age, income, and geography. The study is based on a comprehensive, nationwide survey of 3,247 recent and prospective home buyers conducted in the summer of 2020.
